First, some of the works in May continued June. In this month, the translations of product information and company profiles are revised again and again, with the discussions between Peter and me. Some sentences had to be re-writing to make the expression clear and concise. After that, paragraphs were picked and composed together, which make those previous works into a well organized AD material.
For the reason that Twiki is more suitable for internal use than external use as a marketing material, there could be a specific marketing edition in English later on, which would be translated into Chinese as soon as possible.
Second, some of the time was spent on searching potential customers in a book about appeal exporters in Hong Kong. RDN’s target buyers should be either brand holders or manufactories who have their own brands. According to this requirement, there were quite few suitable brands for now. But the process will be continued to the next month.
Third, ‘communication policy’ and ‘sales processes’ are shared on Twiki. ‘Employee handbook’ would be the next. Even with the Ms-Word like processor, the editing of Twiki is a little bit complicated. To make some specific format, HTML was required. The good thing is, for me, it can be learned by practicing in sandbox again and again.
Forth, the making of Chinese subtitle of RDN AD film clips was finished. The co-work with Mikael on adjusting timeline was the last work. One thing worth to mention is the attitude of trying to be perfect. The timeline was as accurate as one quarter second. During the process, I learned to be demanding on details.
Talking about the high requirement for the work, when I translated the media profile, I lose four lines of passage. I rushed to hand in that, without comparing the Chinese with English version. It was not found until several days later, when I did another work with this passage. Although I reported it as soon as possible, it was still a big lesson for me. Never can be too careful about your work.
Fifth, a good thing to know, and I learned this month, is things should be done according to the priority. When single task situation came to multitasks, they have to be done by sequence, which means important things should be done first. If this planning skills goes further, it may come to ‘Pareto analysis’: ‘by doing 20% of work you can generate 80% of the advantage of doing the entire job. The 80-20-rule can also be applied to increase productivity.’ I think it is possible.
Sixth, during the many times of revising translations back and forth, I realized, the open mind always has positive effect on learning. At the beginning, it could be kind of embarrassing when someone point out your mistake. But soon it could be realized, it really helps preventing further loss by this mistake. Besides that, an open mind can bring other’s wise into you.
Comparing with last month, this month is less with curious feelings, but more with carefulness requirement. The work can be annoying somehow. While, there’s always a better solution, like taking the duty, than turn the face away from it.
This month was full of new challenges and opportunities for a greenhand from school.
As in the very first month, my assignments began with learning the basic information of the company, and then the translating work. The whole month made a conclusion with the writing of ‘communication policy’ (draft). These works gave me a start of learning practical knowledge of the company business, on how it works and how to get myself involved in this progress.
Firstly, before everything, I learnt much information of the company products and business modal. These information are stated in Twiki and employee handbooks. On the second week, I began learning to use Business Set software. This internal information system enabled customer information saving and sharing with all the authorized employees. By inputting much contactor information, I got more and more ideas of our partners and potential customers.
Secondly, after these work, the company started the project of adding some advertisements AD clips with Chinese subtitles. It is not a complex work, but we encounter the situation that we have to make timeline ourselves. Even that, we finished it without much delay.
Thirdly, the translation of Twiki is the work has to be done, but not in a hurry. This work was half finished on the ‘business operation- ALTRO’ section. Without doubt, the translation speed will be faster, in the next month, with the more familiar with the product information and many sections left are repeating the same words as before. It will be continued when I am not busy with other work.
Fourthly, the drafting of communication policy, took much longer time than these projects above. The slow came from the misunderstanding of the project purpose at the beginning. But soon after that, it came to the right track. This project is on collecting feedbacks from employees by the end of this month.
Lastly, during the reading for the purpose of communication policy, a prototype of survey, which aims to locate the block of the information flow in the company, came as a possibility. This would be send out in June, and if everything goes well, the study result will help the company raise the efficiency of the information flow system, regardless of route.
Besides the visible gains, I learnt many during several exercises on communicating with co-workers, managing office software, and practicing academic knowledge. On the mental side, the idea of self-motivation came to mind and started to contribute a lot during the work. It could be considered as a good mental preparation of being a professional employee.
With strong feeling, the self-taught ability is also essential for the developing of professional skills in the company. A new employee can use this ability to continuously redefine the limit of your future. Comparing with school life, this feeling helps to change the attitude of learning new knowledge from feeding by someone, to hunting from somewhere.
Let’s see what will be the challenge for next month, maybe marketing related.
